Paul Mahon is a multidisciplinary visual artist, filmmaker, producer, musician, and creative director based in Kilkenny (Thomastown area), Ireland.
With over two decades of professional experience in the audio-visual (A/V) world, he specializes in blending film production, motion graphics, live visuals, music composition, editing, directing, and photography to create immersive, fully realized projects for clients, collaborators, and his own artistic output.
His career began as a passionate hobby in his youth, producing skateboarding and BMX videos that captured the local scene in Kilkenny.
This early work, including the influential skate documentary A Summer Well Wasted (nearly 20 years ago), served as the foundation for establishing Geppetto—his creative studio and platform for video production, visuals, and collaborative projects. Through Geppetto, Paul has directed, produced, edited, scored, and provided motion graphics for a wide range of short films, music videos, promotional pieces, documentaries, and live performances.
Notable highlights include a visually striking BMX short film featuring Donnacha Carroll, shot on location at iconic Kilkenny landmarks like Kilkenny Castle, the Courthouse, and The Parade (2018), which showcased breathtaking stunts and promoted the city's summer vibe.
Paul's visual work has extended to collaborations with prominent Irish and international artists, including providing visuals and projections for acts such as RSAG (Rarely Seen Above Ground—live silhouette projections and virtual band concepts), Jerry Fish, Bantum, Walking on Cars, and visual links to Linkin Park and Rodrigo y Gabriela. His short films have screened at festivals across Ireland and internationally (including London, Paris, Sydney, and New York), with his debut short Eric earning an award at the Canadian International Film Festival. He has also contributed to music videos, fashion films (e.g., early collaborations tied to partner Zoe Wong's Zoe Carol label), and experimental live AV sets.In parallel, Paul has evolved his musical side under the pseudonym TANOKI, shifting from earlier Geppetto-era releases and band work (including fronting the Geppetto collective/band with members like Colm O'Caoimh, Jeremy Hickey, and others for gigs such as supporting Amiina at Kilkenny Arts Festival in 2009) to a focused producer role. TANOKI blends electro, trip-hop, funk, experimental electronica, cinematic elements, and jazz influences, often exploring themes of technology's beauty and dangers, reality vs. fantasy, and human connection in a digital age. His debut album File New (released March 2022) features collaborations with vocalists and musicians including Farah Elle (on tracks like "Let Go," "Loading," "This Place We're In," and "Silence"), Colm O'Caoimh (violin, keys, guitar on multiple tracks), and Tay Edwards (rap on "It Has Begun"). Singles from the album earned 'Track of the Week' nods from outlets like Hot Press, with strong airplay on RTÉ 2FM, KCLR 96FM, and others. The project includes self-produced elements (guitar, bass, synths, keys, programming, mixing) alongside additional mixing by Daithí and mastering by Darragh Nolan.
TANOKI's live shows emphasize heavy visuals, lighting, and audio-visual integration, as seen in his debut album launch at Kilkenny's Set Theatre alongside Daithí.Throughout his practice, Paul operates as a "creative factotum"—a one-stop multidisciplinary maker who thrives on experimentation, play, and cross-pollination between visuals, sound, and storytelling.
Based in Kilkenny/Thomastown, he freelances globally while remaining deeply rooted in the Irish arts scene, from local festivals and community projects to international screenings and collaborations. Open to commissions in film direction, video production, music production, live visuals, motion design, scoring, and hybrid AV projects.
