When I Go
2017
Director, Cinematography, Editor, Drone
I shot and directed the official music video for Elaine Mai's "When I Go"—a serene yet powerful visual journey entirely filmed at a breathtaking lake just a ten-minute walk from where Elaine grew up in Mayo.
This personal, natural location provided the perfect backdrop: calm waters, expansive skies, and shifting light that mirror the song's themes of gaining perspective, reconnecting with nature, clearing the mind, and moving from darkness into light.
The video takes viewers on that emotional arc—starting in quieter, introspective moments and building toward a sense of release and renewal—through effortless, considered cinematography: wide landscape shots capturing the Irish wilderness, intimate close-ups on Elaine, subtle lighting transitions, and rhythmic edits synced to the track's emotive electronic layers and soaring vocals. It's a piece of visual art that works in tandem with the song, emphasizing simplicity, beauty, and emotional depth without overproduction.
Premiered via GCN (Gay Community News) as a "brand new music video" shot at Elaine's childhood lake in Mayo—described as "breathtaking Irish landscape footage" and "an effortless but considered piece of visual art" (October 2017).
